Dyson AM09 Review — Stylish Heater-Fan, But Is It Worth the Price? My Honest Thoughts

By Nora Sep22,2025

I first saw the Dyson AM09 in one of those high-end display stores, all sleek and bladeless, and liked how futuristic it looked. I thought: “If this works as advertised, it’ll be the only heater/fan I’ll need for both summer and winter.” Now, after months living with one, I can say… some parts do impress, others feel overpriced for what you get.

What Is the Dyson AM09 Space Heater?

The Dyson AM09 is a combination fan and heater, part of Dyson’s Hot + Cool line. It uses Dyson’s Air Multiplier™ technology with a Jet Focus option to send either a strong, directed airflow or a more diffused spread. It has 10 power/speed levels, a remote control, oscillation, and timer settings. For heating, it can push up to ~2000 watts (in some versions) to warm rooms, and for cooling, it acts like a powerful fan. It also promises safety features (no exposed heating elements, tip-over shutoff) and a design that’s easy to clean.

Why I Bought It

I wanted a single unit that could do two jobs: cool me during hot nights and heat my room without breaking out an ugly space heater. I was tired of older fan/heater combos that were noisy, clunky, with exposed blades or heating elements. The Dyson looked safe, stylish, and promised solid performance. I convinced myself that if the design and function were good, the high price could be justified.

My Experience Using It

When I first plugged the AM09 in, I was impressed. The look and feel are premium, with metal accents, solid build, a remote that sticks magnetically, etc. Initially, the fan mode is nice: on lower settings, it’s quiet, comfortable, and doesn’t disturb other conversations or the TV. I could feel a strong, gentle airflow without the harsh gusts regular fans give.

Switching to heating mode was satisfying on cold evenings. It warms up fairly fast, and you can feel the heat spread. The Jet Focus mode is particularly useful when I just want warmth directed on me (for example, when working at a desk or reading), while diffused mode helps more for general room warmth.

However, some of the problems showed up sooner than I’d like. For one, the fan is not whisper-quiet at maximum speed. When turned up, especially in mixed mode (heat + wide oscillation), it becomes noticeably loud… enough that watching TV or sleeping nearby is less comfortable. Also, while heating is good, it’s not always evenly warm across very large or high-ceiling rooms… corners stay cooler.

Another recurring issue was the remote. The remote battery drains fast, and sometimes the remote doesn’t respond from even a few meters away. I experienced this at certain angles or distances; the IR signal was inconsistent. Also, one evening, the unit clicked and made a slight noise during oscillation, which is something that still bothers me now.

Maintenance feels pretty minimal… no sweaty grills or messy cleaning. The surface wipes clean easily. But dust accumulation at the vents and base can affect performance over time. Also, the lack of a HEPA filter or any air purification features means it’s only doing airflow/heating, not “clean air” work.

Overall, it mostly lives up to its design and heating promises in small to medium-sized rooms. But you pay a lot for that design + brand, and some inconveniences make you wonder if cheaper options might do “good enough.”

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Elegant, bladeless design, safe around kids & pets, easy to clean.
  • Dual function: decent heating + cooling in one unit.
  • Jet Focus mode is useful for directed airflow; diffused mode better for room comfort.
  • Good temperature control and timer settings.
  • Premium look; feels solid and well-made.

Cons

  • Very high price.
  • Remote battery drains quickly; remote control isn’t always reliable from distance.
  • Loud at higher fan/speed settings, especially with heat + oscillation.
  • Cooling function doesn’t replace an AC; it’s basically a fan.
  • Heating not always even in big rooms; corners may stay cold.
  • No purification or advanced filtration features.

Is It a Scam?

No, not a scam. It’s clearly a well-built product with good performance in many areas, especially heating and making airflow feel nice. But it is overkill in terms of price vs what some of the features deliver. The marketing sometimes oversells (quietness, cooling power, remote reliability), so expectations need to be tempered.

Alternatives

If you’re considering something like this, here are some alternatives people seem to rate that may give better value or different trade-offs:

  • Dyson AM07 / AM06 (fans only)
  • Vornado
  • Lasko heater-fan combos
  • DeLonghi

Conclusion: Would I Recommend It?

Yes, but only if your priorities are design, safety, decent heating + fan, and you value the brand. If you want a “premium appliance” that looks good and works well in small-to-medium rooms, the AM09 delivers mostly.

If you want strong cooling for summer heat, ultra-quiet sleep, or performance in large spaces, you might feel let down by its fan mode, price, or noise levels.

If I were buying again, I’d consider whether I can live with the trade-offs (remote issues, noise) and whether cheaper models might be “good enough.”
